On this day (April 19) in 2011, Fidel Castro resigned as the First Secretary of the Communist Party. Born on August 13, 1926, Castro ruled Cuba continuously for four and a half decades.

On this day in 2011: Resignation by Castro

Castro defeated dictator General Fulgencio Batista and established a communist regime in the country. Castro became the First Secretary of the Communist Party on October 3, 1965 and became Prime Minister on February 16, 1959.

He was the Prime Minister of the country until December 2, 1976, and since then he was the President of Cuba until February 24, 2008. His attempt to overthrow the Batista-led government in 1953 failed.

After that, he was jailed for a year. After his release from prison, he started a revolution together with Rahul Castro and Che Guevara. With the success of the revolution, the angry US even tried to oust him in 1961. Castro died on November 25, 2016 at the age of 90.
