1994 Today: Former US President Nixon dies

Nixon, who became president in 1969, was elected to a second term in 1972. He was forced to resign on August 8, 1974 without completing his second term.

He was forced to resign after almost facing impeachment due to the 'Watergate scandal'. Nixon, who improved US relations with the Soviet Union, China and Arab countries during his first term, wanted to be president for a second term anyway. For that, on June 17, 1972, he assigned five people, including his security coordinator, to the National Committee of the Democratic Party in the Watergate Complex in Washington DC.

After the arrest of members of a team that stole several documents related to the Democratic Party, Nixon used the state apparatus to cover up the incident. The Washington Post published news about it. Similarly, Nixon was forced to hand over the tapes and documents captured by the Supreme Court after being ordered by the Supreme Court.

In addition, Nixon resigned from the presidency in an address to the nation after it was determined that he would be fired if the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House of Representatives moved forward with impeachment motions against him. With his resignation, the then Vice President Gerald Ford became the President of the United States. Ford later used his constitutional powers to prevent Nixon from being convicted.
